The game isn’t just a love letter to Turrican though but European 16-bit gaming in general, with clear visual inspiration from Shadow Of The Beast and other Psygnosis games. Like Turrican you can move in any direction and many of the levels are almost open world, in the way you can go off exploring and always be fairly confident of finding something of interest – if only collectable jewels to prove your adventurism. The impressively large bosses offer the greatest challenge but the minute-to-minute platform action is also cleverly paced and designed. There are a few power-ups hidden away in the game’s more obscure corners but it’s more about learning how to use the weapons you begin with than constantly searching in vain for the next big blaster. The developer clearly understands the original’s appeal though and makes the most of the three default weapons: the laser hosepipe, a wide beam arc weapon, and a shorter range scattershot gun. The charts aren’t exactly drowning under the weight of Turrican clones at the moment though so the fact that the game controls and plays almost identically is a positive not a negative.
